Lunar Eclipse - September 27

After the afternoon church service, I went home and got changed and drove down to the Lakeshore.  I wanted to find a good spot to capture pictures of the Lunar eclipse.  I was amazed at how many people had the same idea as I did.  Parking was a challenge but I was finally able to find a spot.

I had packed a light dinner as I knew it would be a long night.  I was optimistic that we were going to have a nice night with clear skies.  Sadly I was wrong. The first glimpse of the moon was around 8:30 as the clouds parted.  I didn't see it come up at all which was disappointing.  Sadly the cloud cover got heavier and heavier so I finally gave up.  I did get a few pictures so it wasn't a lost night.

Humber Valley Golf

Tonight, Arja, Grace, Teresa and I went golfing at Humber Valley.  It's been a while since we have been here but we chose to golf here because Cardinal wasn't able to offer us a tee time for today.

We tee'd off at 4:15 which was a good time to start. The course wasn't busy which made it nice.  My game wasn't the greatest, but that was ok as I was golfing with my favorite golfing partners (excluding Claudia) today and we enjoyed ourselves.  The weather was beautiful for the last day of summer/first day of fall.

We were able to be out on the course until about 7:30.  After golf everyone came to my house for dinner which was really nice. I love these evenings with the girls as we are able to be ourselves and we are open and honest with each other.  Thank you for a wonder night together.  We missed our friend Claudia, who is enjoying the beautiful weather in Florida.
There were deer on the course that we were able to enjoy!

So close!  Arja was taking a picture of one that was on the green!!

Family Golf - Horseshoe Valley - Valley Course

Yesterday we had our annual family golf tournament.  Many of us met for breakfast at Sunset Grill in Barrie first thing in the morning.  We enjoyed a leisurely breakfast all together before heading to the course.  Our tee time was planned for 11:00 a.m. and there was 12 of us golfing.  It was a good turn out and we were all excited to be out enjoying the beautiful course.  A friend of Henry and Yolande came along with us this year.  Paul Van Stralen - who is the Pastor of Springdale church was happy to come along and fill one empty space that we had.

The course was very challenging and narrow.  Sadly I lost many balls (probably about a dozen) and I spent a lot of time in the woods looking for them.  I did find about 8 to replace those that I lost.  It rained a fair bit while we were golfing but we were prepared with rain suits so that didn't bother us much.

It was fun with be with everyone.  We had a nice bbq at Yolande and Henry's afterward.  Mom, Justin, Sandra, Sean and Rene Van Stralen and her family all joined us for dinner.

It was a wonderful day.

A day at Lora Bay

We were up early this morning and on the road by 6:30.  The drive was good and there wasn't alot of traffic going our way.  We were blessed with a beautiful sunrise as we passed through the Holland Marsh.  There was fog along the ground creating a beautiful view.

This was our first time golfing at Lora Bay.  We really enjoyed the course.  Wow were the greens challenging.  There were no easy reads here.  We golfed with another couple - Cheryl and Jim.   They were recently retired and enjoying the summer that we have been having.  We had a fun round with them.

This is definitely a place that we will come back to!!

Sears - Great Canadian Run - The Relay to End Kid's Cancer

Ralph was awake early on Saturday morning. 3:00 a.m. and he was peering out the window groaning to himself about the rain that was coming down.  He couldn't sleep.  His mind was racing as he thought about the upcoming run.  He had never participated in something like this before and didn't know what to expect.  He woke me up early and after a light breakfast we headed out the door.  We were an hour early at the checkpoint where he was to start his portion of the Relay.  As a matter of fact, we were the first ones there so I suggested to Ralph that we drive along his route and see what he would be required to run on the first leg.  His route started in Palgrave and was about 5.7 km.  Wow we thought...there sure are a lot of hills on this route. More up hills than down hills.  After driving around a bit we went back to the starting point and waited as more runners started arriving.  There was sense of excitement in the air.  Everyone was laughing, cheering and ringing bells.  The runners were all ages from children to seniors.  Everyone wanted to participate.  Slowly the first runners started appearing.  One by one they came in and passed along their GPS (which they wore around their waists) to the next runner.  Finally Ralph saw his team mate, it was his turn.  He was happy to get started as it was cold standing around waiting.  Thankfully the rain had stopped and he was able to stay dry.

Once he started running, I followed along in the truck stopping every once in a while to take photograph's along the way.  What fun!  I could do something that I have wanted to do for years (photograph in the country) and periodically see Ralph run by where I could shout out words of encouragement.

The hills were very challenging but Ralph did great.  It was much much more than he expected, but he kept going.  I was very proud of him.  I drove up to the next check point and watched as he passed along the GPS to his next team member.  There were 8 members on his team but 1 member dropped out after his first run.  The team inspired each other to keep running.  They changed their strategy halfway through and had a runner jump in and relieve each other after about 3K into the run so that they could keep a fast pace.  That seemed to work much better for them.

I followed along with them up until check point 10.  At that point they started running on trails making it difficult to follow along by truck.    I went to Wasaga Beach and spent some time at the water.  The wind was really blowing but it was nice to sit by the water and enjoy the scenery.  I spent about an hour there relaxing.  I then spent some time in Collingwood before meeting Ralph and his team at Blue Mountain.

They surprised me by finishing well beyond what they expected.  Ralph had said to plan for 7:30 p.m. but they got in at around 5:30.  I was amazed!  They placed 9th overall from 45 teams.  There were just over 400 runners at this event.

Labour Day weekend

It's been quite some time since I updated my blog so I thought I would post about our weekend.

This weekend Ralph and I went to NOTL on Saturday and spent a nice couple of hours investigating the area. Our main purpose was to go to The Pie Plate as we promised to bring some pies to Fred and Anna's when we came for dinner on Saturday evening.  We did a little shopping at the Outlet Mall and enjoyed a nice lunch at Peninsula Lakes.  It was a nice relaxing day.

On Monday morning we were up early and picked up Lawrence and Teresa at 5:30.  We were off to Owen Sound to play a round at Cobble Beach.  What a challenging course.  I always forget how difficult their greens are.  The ground is a little spongy as you walk on them and the ball certainly doesn't run the way you expect it to.  While my game wasn't the greatest, the company was and we all had a great time. It was  beautiful day wit the breeze blowing nicely off Georgian Bay.  We played 27 holes and were refreshed with a little rain on the last two of them.  We topped off our round with dinner at the course.  I'll have to remember that the Mussel's are really good here. We'll have to try them again.
